Technology Freebies, Discounts, and Support
By Alycia Maurer, April 2016
Have you been in a situation where you needed to have new or updated software in order to complete the required assignments for a class? Dealing with this at the last minute is not an ideal situation and can cause even the most seasoned graduate student to panic. The good news is Utica College has resources to provide popular software for free or at reduced cost. How awesome is that?!
Included on the software download website are helpful tips and links to other support information. A few examples of the many topics include how to create .pdf documents, how to mail merge, how to obtain or reset your student account password, and how to save paper when printing.
Another good resource is the online tutoring made available to Utica students. It is called SMARTTHINKING and is accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Plus, you use your Banner ID and password to log in! I personally love how Utica utilizes single sign in where they can. The below link will take you to the page where you can review technical requirements and subjects covered, download the handbook, and view an orientation video.
Read & Write Gold
Utica also offers Read & Write Gold, an award-winning literacy program that you install on your computer. It integrates toolbars into Word, Adobe, and Internet Explorer in addition to providing support for reading, writing, study, and research. The Fact Folder functionality is helpful for writing papers for classes and is invaluable for capstone courses. You can find more information on the capabilities of this program at the link above.
You can also visit the Read & Write Gold home page at www.utica.edu/rwg (Note: you will need your UC network login to access the page.)
There are also numerous support options for Engage, including an option for Support in the menu ribbon. The drop-down selection list includes the main support page, a quick reference guide, password reset help, a browser compatibility check, and contact information for support. There is also a selection for other help sheets which cover topics such as help with video playback, clearing browser cache, calendars, and emails, specifically including Utica email on smart phones.
Lastly, technical resources are available at Utica should you have any issues with installation of these programs. The contact information and hours can be found on the software download web site and also below:
Lower Level, Gannett Library
8:30am to 5:00pm Weekdays
Phone: (315) 792-3115
I encourage you to not only plan ahead for the software you may need for your course of study, but also install and use the software to ensure it works properly, so you can be more productive in your classes. If you utilize the valuable resources above, you’ll be able to relax and actually enjoy learning.
