Global Health Care Issues

Gain a global perspective on health, illness, and wellness.

Examine why the overall health of populations around the world varies. As you look at health care disparities, management of acute and chronic disease, health care policy, health care delivery, life span health issues, and cultural competence, you’ll gain a global perspective on health, illness, and wellness.

As you consider the role culture may play in individual health, you’ll understand the importance of improving your own level of cultural competence and integrating this awareness into your practice.

You’ll examine the global health issues in what are considered developed and developing countries. As you evaluate the forces currently influencing health care and their future impact upon global health, you’ll appreciate the disparity in resource allocation globally and the resulting impact on health outcomes.

Global health care is not just about medicine—it’s also about economics and politics. Comparing the various health care systems currently in existence across the world, you’ll gain insight into their strengths and weaknesses, as well as external influences such as government stability, national wealth, corruption, and many other factors.

You’ll explore the differences that exist in resource allocation for mental health services globally and the impact upon mental health outcomes. You’ll also focus on the diseases that are currently impacting global health, such as HIV/AIDS, cholera, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, asthma, and obesity.

In any culture, health issues and conditions can change across a life span. As you examine global reproductive health and the global health of infants, children, adults, and the elderly, you’ll explore topics ranging from fertility and pregnancy to dementia and end-of-life care.
