Leadership is one of the oldest and most frequently explored areas of business management. Questions about how we lead, what effective leadership is, and how much impact the leader or leaders have on an organization are continually debated in both professional and academic settings. In BUS 611 Principles and Practices of Leadership I, you’ll explore various theories and aspects of leadership and gain an understanding of how they are applied in real-world settings.

Course Description

An understanding of leadership and different leadership styles is an invaluable tool in business and life. Whether you view yourself as a leader or a follower, understanding the motivations, situations, and impacts of leadership can greatly improve your ability to navigate professional arenas. You’ll consider the key elements of leadership and explore various leadership theories as you come to understand the specific skills all effective leaders need.

A strong leader quickly adapts to an organization’s needs for change, motivation and ethical management. While there are key traits shared by all effective leaders, individual personalities can play a role in leadership style. By comparing the three levels of moral development, you’ll gain an appreciation for the stakeholder approach to ethics.

Sample Assignment

Throughout this course, you will complete a variety of self-assessments and a group project to gain a better understanding of your personal leadership style. The assignments will provide you with a foundation for your personal leadership styles and behaviors that will be used to develop your leadership plan at the end of BUS 612.

As you examine trait, behavioral, and contingency theories, you’ll consider what the strongest influences on leadership are. This will help you determine an appropriate leadership style and create a framework for contingency leadership.

For a successful leader to manifest personal or positional power, he or she must learn to successfully manage human capital and navigate organizational politics. You’ll understand why these skills require a leader to understand the relationships among negotiation and conflict, ethical influencing tactics, power sources, and politics.
