In this video, Dr. Shanna Van Slyke, Associate Professor of Criminal Justice, describes to UCTV Host, Dr. James Norrie, how she incorporates the criminal justice and cybersecurity industry topics and issues that she is passionate about into her online courses at Utica College. This philosophy is adopted by all faculty within the online programs because it provides an enriched curriculum that is highly relevant to the real world and allows students to correlate theory with practical application in their careers.
Video Transcript: Faculty bring passion and experience into the classroom.
Dr. Norrie: Welcome back to UCTV, the spring edition. We're all in our t-shirts down here in central New York. And it's a beautiful spring day. And I'm here talking with Dr. Shanna Van Slyke. I want to talk a little bit, Shanna, about the underpinnings, of the kinds of things, the disciplines, if you like, that students will be exposed to in our criminal justice, our cyber security, or our economic crime programs. So tell me a little bit about that.
Dr. Shanna Van Slyke: Well whichever one you pick, what we're studying is deviant behavior and how to control it. Figure out why or how people are breaking the law so that we can prevent it. Not just to save money in the area of economic crime, but in all three of these fields, there are several types of losses associated with these types of crimes. And then in some way, shape, or form, it wouldn't be happening without the absence of a capable guardian.
Dr. Norrie: So you're absolutely a world class researcher in criminology. You're well published and you've written books. A new book recently, what was the title of your new book?
Dr. Shanna Van Slyke: The new book is The Oxford Handbook of White Collar Crime.
Dr. Norrie: And white collar crime is a big part of what we investigate. So how do you bring your research into your teaching and into the classroom?
Dr. Shanna Van Slyke: That's one of my favorite parts about my job. I love research, and I love teaching, and I love trying to get my students to love what I love. So whatever I'm interested in, that's what I'm excited about, and I try to bring that excitement into the classroom and use that to motivate my students to study and get interested in their field and do their best while they're here at Utica College.
Dr. Norrie: Well we're delighted you are on our faculty. You are one of our stars in both research and teaching. (We are) so delightful to have you here for an episode this morning.
