What to Expect in your Cybersecurity Program

By Micaela Burney, April 2016

With student debt at an all-time high, it is no surprise that most students are being very careful when choosing a major in college. The days are long gone where you could explore your options and take classes that may give insight on who you are as a person. As a student, I have the option to try several things and then choose what I want to study, but economics play an important part in the college experience. The economy is driving students to make smart money-making decisions.

So, let’s make a leap and say you know you want to attend Utica College (1st smart decision – congratulations!) You also know you want to study cyber-security (Wow – two great decisions in a row! You’re off to a great start.) But now what? The question then becomes: What can I expect with Utica’s Cybersecurity concentration?

The Utica Cybersecurity program will prepare you for one of the fastest growing fields. Data compiled by Burning Glass shows that postings for cybersecurity jobs grew 74% from 2007 to 2013. High employer demand, promotion prospects, and fabulous salaries – what’s not to love about Cybersecurity?

The program is designed to be a multi-dimensional approach to cybersecurity, so the concentration covers a broad set of fundamental topics. It is a slow build of courses that give students a solid foundation of key concepts along with technical and non-technical terms required to successfully complete the program. Students gain insight into the importance of cybersecurity and the integral role of cybersecurity professionals. Additionally, the online format provides a dynamic learning experience where users can explore core cybersecurity principles, security architecture, risk management, cyberattacks, incidents, and emerging IT and IS technologies. You will develop an understanding of computer network security principles, systems, strategies, cyber forensics, and the federal and state agencies that are intended to secure the nation from cyberattacks.

The Cybersecurity instructors at Utica College have either worked or are currently working in the field of cybersecurity and have been selected because of their experience and knowledge. From the beginning of your journey at Utica College, you’ll see the program is designed to hit the road with courses relevant to the field, so no time (or money) is wasted on what I like to describe as “fluff”.

Circling back to the beginning of this blog, what you can expect from the Cybersecurity concentration (and frankly what you deserve from any college program) is it will quickly and thoroughly prepare you for an exciting, fast-paced, and growing field.
