Video Transcript – Online RN to BS Nursing (RN-BSN) Program Overview by Adjunct Faculty, Amy Haver, MS RN

Program Structure
The program at Utica College is nice because it does offer eight-week courses so you can take… You know, it’s your choice. You can take two classes at once or one class at a time every eight weeks.

Learning in an Online Environment
Another thing that’s really nice about this program is that you don’t have to be on site at the college. You can do everything from a distance. Many students come into the class saying, “This is my first online class. I’m not sure if I’m going to like it. I’m used to the traditional classroom setting.” and several of them come out of it saying, “This is for me. This is so convenient, I can do it first thing in the morning, I can do it after work.” and a lot of our students have young kids, too, so it works with a family schedule, too.

The program at Utica College is nice because we limit the class sizes to approximately 15 students per course. So you have a close relationship with those students that are in the class with you and also with the faculty.

In my own course, we have the students do a project where they use a web cam so we get to see each other face to face on two different occasions and they are able to demonstrate their skills to me by using the web cam. These are their physical assessment skills so you know they’re working in the hospital with a patient doing an examination on them.

Bringing Work Experience into the Course Work
Working as a nurse practitioner, you have to be up to date with your assessment skills, with the hospital policy and procedures, with evidence-based practice. So that is extremely helpful as I’m teaching to the students to bring out, the new research to them.

How to be successful in the online RN to BS Nursing Program
I would say to somebody who is going to take this program, it takes dedication. It takes perseverance, but if you stick with it in two short years, you can be finished with your Bachelor’s Degree and you get out of it what you put into it really.
